Creating grid using polygonal line and width is the simplest way to create grid from my view. But I would like to ask what is the advantage of creating grid based on river survay data.

Actually the grid creation method can be selected based on your available data and the purpose of your model etc.
If river survey data is available, its easier to create a grid using river survey data. In this situation we should create a file called xxxx.riv. With Japanese river survey data this is much easier. if you create the grid using river survey data, the cross sections are visible and its easy to track the mistakes in mapping etc. I personally prefer grid creation with river survey data if they are available.
